The invisibility of the Peranakan Chinese culture
The problem
of being part of a small ethnic minority is that our history, culture,
visions
and identity, is hardly being represented in the media in the country where
we live.
This applies especially to the Peranakans who migrated to Western countries. But also in Indonesia where expressions of (Peranakan) Chinese culture were forbidden for many years. One doesn’t read novels or watch television programmes, soaps, films
about the
lives of Peranakan Chinese, written and made by Peranakan Chinese. Our
images
and visions are not circulating in the world and are not reflected in
the
media. One might say that we are quite invisible in the dominant
culture and in the world.
Reflecting our culture, history and identity
This
website is meant to reflect the culture, history and identity of Peranakan Chinese with a special focus on the Peranakans in Indonesia and in Western countries. (Since there are already active organizations for the Peranakans in Malaysia, and in Singapore.)
This way we can identify ourselves with the articles and stories we read, and the videofilms that are shown on this site.
This also gives a possibility for the younger generation of Peranakans who have become westernized, to get reacquainted with their roots.
Contributions such as articles, stories, work of art are more than welcome.
